Free Pizza For Life is a song by Folk-Punk band, Ghost Mice. The first line of that song goes like this,

"I'm gonna write this in a book one day, but for now this song will have to do."

That time is now.

This book follows Chris as he stumbles through his life. It's autobiographical but it tells a fairy tale.
The book follows a linear progression from Chris in high school as he goes to college, drops out, becomes a bum, starts a band and tours the country.
He meets the strangest people, and one in particular becomes his best friend.
Poor and homeless, but together, they concoct increasingly complex schemes to scam The Man. Every scheme has the purpose of getting Pizza. That's it.

It will give you perspective and insight. It will make you laugh, cry, wonder, and smile.
If you don't believe me, listen to the song. It captures the aesthetic of the whole narrative. The book just goes deeper.

Recommended for fans of Folk Punk, DIY, strange tales, and basically everyone who has ever felt alone, lost, confused, or sad.

One of the best known zinesters, Aaron Cometbus once said, "As you get older, you realize that punk is folklore and oral tradition and myths. That's never written about." In "Free Pizza for Life," Chris Clavin tried to capture some of that oft-forgotten folklore with stories from the early days of Plan-It-X Records, one of the most influential and important outlets for American DIY punk music.

I discovered Plan-It-X Records in 2005 and met Chris in 2007 when I booked a show for Ghost Mice in my small mountain town. Not many people showed up. Seven years ago, I never would have guessed how much Plan-It-X would later mean to me. This book reads exactly how I expected it to -- just like Chris is telling a story to me or a small group of friends. There are misspellings and awkwardly assembled sentences, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Some points and stories are abrupt, and by any other standards would need transitions and elaboration, but it all just feels natural and somehow right in "Free Pizza for Life."

If you are interested in Plan-It-X Records, Bloomington, punklore, Chris Clavin, several ways to get free pizza (both legal and otherwise), or finding out who Samantha Dorsett was and the impact she had on her friends and DIY punk music you should read this book.

Punk rock music saved my life, and I am so glad that this book exists.

Hi Chris,
I just read "Free Pizza for Life". Loved it. I laughed, I cried, i peed my pants a little. It was great to hear the story behind the label i love so much. I regarded the whole story as a road trip story which are my favorite kind of stories. I was waiting for the story to lead you to Michigan where I live but it never happened! Also, my star struck self was waiting to hear about when you met Kimya for the first time. But other than that loved the book and how you wrote it.
Thought I would throw you a line so you could know one more wannabe crust punk in Michigan really appreciates you (and Sam) and all you did for the world.
